New Endowed Fellowship established to benefit graduate students in Aquatic and Fishery Sciences and Marine and Environmental Affairs

We are pleased to announce that donors Drs. Usha and S. Rao Varanasi have established the Usha and S. Rao Varanasi Endowed Fellowship in Environmental and Marine Stewardship.  This endowment will benefit graduate students in the School of Aquatic and Fishery Sciences and School of Marine and Environmental Affairs working at the intersection of policy development and the assessment of environmental impacts on natural resources caused by anthropogenic factors, including chemical or biological contamination. The endowment will also fund an annual Usha and S. Rao Varanasi Research Derby Award, to be given to the graduate student teams that perform best in the SAFS Research Derby. The establishment of this endowed fellowship continues a strong history of philanthropic support across campus from the Varanasis. They are also integral members of the UW community — Usha is an Affiliate Professor in the School of Aquatic and Fishery Sciences, and Usha and Rao both earned their Ph.D.’s at UW – Usha in Chemistry, and Rao in Aeronautics and Astronautics. We are honored to be the recipients of their wonderful generosity, and look forward to awarding the first Varanasi Endowed Fellowships soon.
