2023 Virtual Environmental Career Fair  – Employer and Student Feedback

  • “Great fair, great employers!”
  • “I think the career fair is really helpful to talk to different people and see what is going on in different job fields.”
  • “I thought the variety of exhibitors was fantastic and offered a diverse group for students to meet with.”
  • “I spoke with my current employer at last year’s Environmental Career Fair. The conversation I had encouraged me to apply for a position, and it ended up being the company I did my senior capstone with! I’m still with the company a year later and have been promoted to a senior leadership position.”
  • “I think virtual provides an easy and quick way for students to talk to many employers and removes the barrier of fear for those who are anxious to walk up to employers in an in-person environment.”
  • “I believe that virtual opportunities to connect with employers is the best route to go, because it allows people to go regardless of their scheduling and how far they are from the fair.”

Career Fair Success Tips for Students

“Show initiative and do your background research. That’ll make you stand out right off the bat. Instead of “Do you have any openings?” or “What do you do?”, aim for more of a dialogue.” — Preston Martin, NewFields

  • Student engaging with employer booth at the 2020 Environmental Career FairUpdate your profile – This way employers can get to know you
  • Register – Be sure to be one of the first to register and sign up for sessions
  • Do your research – Review the organization’s website before the career fair so your questions are specific
  • Prepare for the Fair – Find a quiet place to sit and limit distractions. Show up on time and dress professionally
  • Introduce yourself — Work on your brief elevator pitch and tell them what skills, education and experience you have. Be specific about how these skills relate to the organization or position that you are pursuing. Don’t talk to the employer you’re most interested in first.
  • Leave them with something — provide them with your resume and contact information.
    • On Handshake some employers have set qualifications to define which students can register for their sessions. To ensure you qualify for employer sessions, make sure you fill out the following fields on your profile:
      • School year, major and GPA, which can be found on your profile
      • Work authorization status, which can be found on the Privacy & Settings page
  • For even more tips for career fair success and other job search tips, visit the UW Career and Internship Center. View a recorded version of their Job & Internship Fair Success Workshop to prepare for the fair. Also consider looking at Handshake’s Guide to Success at Virtual Career Fairs.
